What Is SNS Nails and How Does It Compare to Gel or Acrylic?

Nail Art3

SNS nails, or Signature Nail Systems, are a type of dip powder manicure that combines coloured powder with a bonding liquid to create strong, durable nails without UV light. Unlike gel or acrylics, SNS is applied through a dipping process, making it a popular alternative many consider gentler on natural nails.

At New Zealand Beauty School, we understand that with so many nail options available in Kiwi salons, choosing the right one can be overwhelming.

What Is SNS?

SNS stands for Signature Nail Systems, a brand that popularised dip powder in the beauty industry. The process involves dipping nails into coloured powder after applying a base coat, then sealing with activator and topcoat.

How the SNS Process Works

Nails are prepped and cleaned. Base coat is applied. Nails are dipped into coloured powder 2-3 times. Activator hardens the powder. Nails are shaped and buffed. Top coat is applied.

Key Benefits

According to Allure, SNS offers no UV/LED requirement, generally gentler application, wide colour range with added nutrients, and long-lasting results of 2-3 weeks.

How SNS Compares to Other Systems

SNS vs Gel

Application: SNS dips; gel is brushed. Curing: SNS needs no UV; gel requires lamp curing. Durability: SNS typically lasts longer and resists chips better. Flexibility: Gel provides more flex and natural feel.

SNS vs Acrylic

Application: SNS uses pre-coloured powder with simple dipping; acrylics require sculpting. Odour: SNS has minimal odour; acrylics have strong chemical smell. Strength: Acrylics are strongest; SNS offers good durability.

Choosing the Right System

Choose SNS If: You want no-UV, prefer dip powder process, like colour and strength in one step. Choose Gel If: You want flexibility, prefer thinner nails, change colours frequently. Choose Acrylic If: You need maximum strength, want significant length, have very active hands.

Our Certificate in Nail Tech teaches multiple nail systems.
