What to Do If Your Lash Extensions Are Falling Out Too Fast

If your lash extensions are falling out faster than expected, the causes typically include poor aftercare, incorrect application technique, environmental factors, or underlying health conditions. Understanding the root cause is the first step to achieving better lash retention.

Lash extensions are designed to last through your natural lash growth cycle—typically 4-6 weeks with proper care. When they fall out prematurely, something has gone wrong.

Understanding Natural Lash Shedding

Natural lash shedding is completely normal. We lose 1-5 natural lashes per day as part of the growth cycle. When your natural lash sheds, the extension goes with it—this is expected.

However, if a client loses more than 30-40% of their extensions within the first week, something beyond natural shedding is occurring.

Application Issues That Cause Poor Retention

Poor Isolation

Not separating individual lashes properly results in multiple lashes stuck together, causing premature shedding when one lash falls.

Wrong Placement

Placing extensions too close to the eyelid causes irritation. Too far from the lash line weakens the bond.

Adhesive Problems

Too much adhesive creates clumps. Too little results in weak bonds. Old or improperly stored adhesive causes retention issues.

Weight Mismatch

Extensions too heavy for natural lashes cause stress and premature shedding.

At New Zealand Beauty School, proper placement is emphasised in our Certificate in Eyelash Extensions.

Aftercare Issues

Getting lashes wet within 24-48 hours disrupts adhesive curing. Oil-based products break down bonds. Rubbing eyes dislodges extensions. Not cleaning lashes allows buildup.

Environmental Factors

High humidity affects adhesive curing. Swimming pool chlorine and salt water degrade bonds. Steam from showers and saunas weakens adhesion. New Zealand’s beach lifestyle means many clients swim regularly—this needs addressing during consultation.

Health Conditions

Blepharitis causes inflammation disrupting lash health. Thyroid disorders trigger shedding. Certain medications affect hair growth cycles. Stress accelerates fallout.

Prevention Checklist

Keep lashes dry 24-48 hours after application. Avoid oil-based products. Clean with lash-safe cleanser daily. Don’t rub or touch lashes. Sleep on back or use silk pillowcase. Avoid heat and steam. Schedule fills every 2-3 weeks.

When to Find a New Technician

Consider a different provider for consistent poor retention despite following aftercare, significant lash damage, infections or ongoing irritation, or unprofessional practices.
