Our guide to a flawless cut crease

Eye makeup

New and exciting makeup looks are being created every day, each one sparking the imagination for avid makeup artists and enthusiasts.

One such trend is the cut crease, an eyeshadow technique where the crease of the eyelid is defined by using a stark contrast between light and dark eyeshadow. The result is a Bambi-eye effect, making your eyes pop with definition.

But how do you master a flawless cut crease? We are here to help!

We have put together a little guide to help you start experimenting with cut crease makeup, with tips, tricks and friendly advice to support you as you explore – let’s go!

A few tips to start with

  • Cut crease tools – Finding the right brushes and tools that work for you is the first thing to do. Try experimenting with different shapes and sizes of brushes until you find the best ones for you and your technique.
  • Start simple – It can be super tempting to go all in with a super bold look and stark contrast, but it is always best to start simple and work your way up to a bolder crease. Neutral tones are always a winner, so starting off with a gentle contrast will help you master your technique before moving on to more intense looks and exploring different types of cut creases.
  • Messing up is a good thing – Perfecting a makeup look can be pretty frustrating when it doesn’t go right, but don’t give up hope. The more you try, and the more you mess up, the more you learn. The time you put into practising your craft is never time wasted.

A handy 5-step guide to a flawless cut crease

Step 1 – Start with a neutral eyeshadow and gently cover the eyelid.

Step 2 – Taking a darker shade, brush the colour above the eyelid crease and just near the brow bone.

Step 3 – Concealer comes next; cover the lighter eyeshadow with a thin layer of concealer and use an angled brush to define the crease and neaten up the edges between the shadow contrast.

Step 4 – Now, this is where the magic happens. Cover the layer of concealer with white eyeshadow for a stark and stunning contrast.

Step 5 – To define the look further, apply a cat eyeliner look, and there you have yourself a stunning cut crease!
