Brow bleaching – love it or hate it?

Brow bleaching is one of the hottest trends of 2023, with the likes of fashion and beauty models Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner sporting blonde brows on catwalks across the world.

The brow bleaching trend is reminiscent of the ‘skinny brow’ look that rose to popularity during the 90’s. Brow bleaching has become a striking homage to this brow look, and has become another unique way in which to express individuality through makeup and beauty treatments.

In this blog we will answer all those burning questions about brow bleaching – what is it, how do you do it safely and how long will your look stay while you slay the day?

Let’s get to it!

What is eyebrow bleaching?

Eyebrow bleaching is a beauty trend by which bleach is applied to the hair of the brows, and as a result lightening the hair to blonde. This technique gives a ‘barely there’ look, similar to the thin 90’s brow trend, and has become extremely popular in the modern beauty and fashion industry.

This unique look has become a favourite way in which people can express their individuality and change up their look in a more striking way. The look has been described as very ‘fashion-focused’ and has been seen continuously on high-fashion catwalks across the globe.

This look is bold, bright and here to stay.

How long does it take to bleach brows?

Bleach is a highly corrosive product, and particularly when used so close to our eyes, can be a bit of a recipe for disaster. If you are wanting to bleach your brows, or if you want to learn this skill as part of your beauty business, it is highly discouraged to attempt it by yourself – you should always seek the help and guidance of a professional.

If you are really set on the idea of doing it yourself, it is important to do your research and choose a facial hair bleaching product. If your brow hair is naturally quite dark, achieving the full bleached look can be a little more tricky. It is recommended to gradually lighten the brows rather than go 0-10 with a full on bleach. Just like bleaching or colouring a head of hair, you may notice that your brow hair becomes drier and thinner, as the corrosive bleach can affect the health and state of your brows.

Proceed with caution when it comes to brow bleaching, whether at home or professionally (please go to a salon if you can!), and seek medical advice if you experience any irritation or allergic reactions.

How long do bleached brows last?

Bleaching is a pretty permanent process, and while it can fade and grow out as your brows do, once you have bleached your brows they are going to be with you for a while!

As your brows grow you may experience ‘speckled regrowth’ where your natural hair colour begins to grow back in. To avoid constant re-bleaching, tinted brow products can be a great way to keep your look intact whilst also thinking about the well-being of your brows.

The job of an eyebrow technician

Put simply, the job of an eyebrow technician is to tend to a client’s brows, offering services such as shaping, tinting and waxing to help the client achieve their desired look, whether this be a simple reshape or a full beaching or colouring treatment.

An eyebrow technician should have extensive knowledge on hair structure and colour palettes, as well as which shape brows suit which faces – how can your brow look best compliment your face shape and features?

You should also be aware that the job of an eyebrow technician doesn’t just stop at providing the physical beauty treatment. This is often an opportunity for your client to indulge in some self-care, which is why you need to be able to create an inviting and safe space for all kinds of individuals. You may find your client’s opening up about personal topics during this more intimate treatment, so being able to connect, communicate and converse with an empathetic and open mind is a must.
